Nanoparticles Have Low Permeability and Sensitivity to Gases

Researchers from Tarbiat Modares University in Iran have produced biodegradable nanocomposites using nanoparticles for food packaging industry.

The nanoparticles, which offer antibacterial as well as anti-oxidation properties, have low permeability and sensitivity to gases.

In the first stage of the project, researchers added cellulose crystalline nanoparticles and clay nanoparticles in various concentrations to alginate polymer to form bio-nanocomposites.

The nanoparticle and concentration were determined in the end to produce a nanocomposite with low permeability, optimum mechanical properties and less sensitivity to humidity.

Using various herbal essences, the produced nanocomposite was activated in the later stages to create antibacterial and anti-oxidation properties.

Ultimately, the bioactive nanocomposites performance was evaluated in packaging and preservation of aquatic products as well as its performance in laboratorial atmosphere.

The research results revealed that cellulose crystalline nanoparticles, due to their nanometric scale and the structural compatibility of polysaccharide, improved the physical and mechanical properties of alginate films.

In comparison with clay nanoparticles, they showed a better performance.

Due to their crystalline structure, the particles also increased the hydrophilicity of alginate natural films, while clay inorganic nanoparticles increased the hydrophobicity and humidity sensitivity of the films.
