Toyota has launched two hybrid versions of the Japanese domestic market’s 11th-generation Corolla.
Launched together –and differing from the Australian, European and US markets’ small car of the same name – the Corolla Axio sedan and Corolla Fielder wagon both offer the same Toyota Hybrid System II propulsion unit.
Teaming a 54kW/111Nm 1.5-litre Atkinson-cycle engine with a 45kW/169Nm electric motor and an underfloor-mounted nickel-metal hydride battery for a total output of 73kW, the hybrids claim fuel efficiency equivalent to 3.0L/100km. A cooled exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) system also features to further improve efficiency.
Two drive modes are available: Eco-Drive that gives priority to saving fuel and EV Drive that relies solely on using the electric motor.
Both models feature an exclusive front grille, front and rear Synergy Blue emblems and an exclusive Light Blue Metallic paint finish, with the Corolla Fielder wagon also available in ‘special edition’ trim (pictured top).
The interior includes blue-highlighted instrument gauges, a 4.2-inch TFT colour multi-information display and special seat fabrics along with exclusive interior panel designs and a blue-accented leather shift knob.
Toyota promises comfort and space on par with non-hybrid vehicles, with luggage capacity listed at 461L for the Corolla Axio and 407L for the Corolla Fielder – the latter expandable to 872L.
A vehicle proximity notification system designed to warn pedestrians and other people in the immediate vicinity of the vehicle’s approach joins hill-start assist as standard equipment.
The Toyota Corolla Axio sedan and Corolla Fielder wagon are available now in Japan priced from 1,925,000 yen ($22,216).
