ICF Would Be Organizing an 'all India Cotton Trade & Industry Conference' at Coimbatore

The Indian Cotton Federation (ICF), formerly The South India Cotton Association, would be organizing an ‘All India Cotton Trade & Industry Conference’ on September 13-14, 2013, at Coimbatore.

A similar conference organized by the ICF last year drew good response and saw representation of stakeholders from all over India with office bearers of almost all leading associations participating in the deliberations.

The conference discussed challenges facing the Cotton Trade and Industry in 2013, and the problems faced by the cotton community, as discussed in the conference, were communicated to the Central and state government agencies.

“This year the season has well begun and as a policy initiative, Cotton Corporation of India could procure almost 8 percent of the total cotton production for stabilizing the price levels”, ICF president J Thulasidaran said in a statement.

“National Fibre Policy is in the offing and we have a full time Cabinet Rank Textiles Minister to look after the interest of the textile industry,” he added.

Speaking about cotton production during the 2013-14 season, Mr. Thulasidaran said, “Cotton sowing pattern all over India is very encouraging and if agro-climatic conditions sustains to the timely need of the cotton plants, there could not be any doubt, our farmers could be benefited by yield increase, remunerative price and the industry can very well expect the crop level to cross 40 million bales (170 kg each).”

Still, there are several issues that are likely to be discussed at the upcoming conference, including competition from other countries like China, Bangladesh and Thailand.

Recently, the Textiles Minister K Sambasiva Rao said that Indian textile exports should aim for achieving US$ 50 billion by 2014, but representation and collective thinking is necessary to achieve this.
