Jimmy Wales Has Invited Claire Perry to Dinner

Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has invited Claire Perry, the Devizes MP who is Prime Minister David Cameron's 'advisor on childhood' to dinner - so that he can tell her how wrong her plan for internet web filtering is.

Perry is the driving force behind Cameron's plan to introduce mandatory internet service provider (ISP) -level web filtering, which will provide a "default on" porn filter for web users.

The plan has been criticised as unworkable, not least by Wales, who has publicly slammed the idea, engaging Perry in a Twitter argument.

Wales has called the plan "absolutely ridiculous" and that "The software you would use to implement this doesn't work" because filtering software "performs extremely poorly", he told Perry. Wales linked the government's new-found enthusiasm for web filtering - which will naturally have a logging function as a matter of course - with the Communications Data Bill.

"This government wants to spend billions of pounds on "Snooper's Charter". Why the misplaced priorities?" asked Wales.

Perry, meanwhile, complained that Wales "surprisingly confuses the issues of adult content filtering illegal material. As PM said - child abuses images should be blocked".

Wales, however, has said that he made no such error.

In the past, the Internet Watch Founder "accidentally" blocked put Wikipedia on its block list, which is used by ISPs to filter out child porn.

Meanwhile, in response to recently leaked documents indicating that the US and UK security services are spying on all the web traffic they can tap, Wikipedia has brought forward plans to introduce SSL encryption for its website, so that users can peruse Wikipedia over an encrypted link.
