Mitsubishi Motors (MMC) has begun the production of Outlander Sport compact crossover at Mitsubishi Motors North America's (MMNA) Normal facility in Illinois.
The carmaker said that the facility has a capacity to produce 50,000 units and MMC is planning to expand it to 70,000 units in the future.
The facility currently produces models including the Galant, Eclipse, Eclipse Spyder, and the Endeavor specifically for the North American market
The Outlander Sport vehicles planned to produced at the facility will be meant for export to Russia, Central and South America, and the Middle East.
MMC managing director Tetsuro Aikawa said the company is now moving forward with 'global' vehicles that satisfy the needs of many consumers worldwide.
"Through the diligence of every single worker at the Illinois plant, we plan to make great strides not only in the North American market, but in other markets outside of North America by producing and exporting the Outlander Sport," Aikawa said.
The Outlander Sport was initially launched in Japan in February 2010 as the RVR, and was then unveiled in countries all over the world.
MMC had sold over 250,000 units of Outlander Sport worldwide as of June 2012.
