The Fashion Designers Association of Nigeria (FADAN) has proposed to build a garment production hub in Lagos, according to a report by The Nigerian Observer.

The Lagos state coordinator of the association, Mr. Kolawole Kuddus said they would need about N150 million for constructing the hub. The production hub would include a retail store to display the garments and accessories made by Nigerian fashion designers and garment manufacturers, he added.

As the hub would have a retail store displaying the items, it would be a meeting point for the leading brands in the Nigerian apparel market, he said.

Mr. Kuddus said the hub would serve as a breeding ground for budding fashion designers, reduce the high production costs in fashion designing, and also boost productivity.

Nigeria boasts of a fashion industry that employs about 70 percent of the graduates in the last three years in different fields which include, fashion photography, magazine production, pattern making, styling, and wardrobe consultancy, he added.

With a budget of N150 million for building the production hub, FADAN is looking forward to financial support from the Government of Nigeria and other investors, Mr. Kuddus said.

FADAN had started a monthly program with the name "Designers' Mart", in June 2014, where young fashion designers gather together to display their latest products and designs. The program has attracted many fashion lovers and has proved to be profitable to the fashion designers.

Nigerian garment industry is expected to be worth about N10 billion, with an average Nigerian spending between N100,000 to N 1 million per year on garments made in Nigeria.
