The first 100 new-generation Subaru WRX sports cars destined for Australia will be available to pre-order from 12pm today.
A secure payment portal on Subaru Australia's website will allow the first 100 customers to select the colour, transmission and preferred dealer for a new WRX, which isn't scheduled to arrive in local showrooms until March/April.
Subaru Australia will take a fully refundable $2500 deposit, guaranteeing customers their new Subaru WRX is among the first batch to land in Australia. Each of the vehicles will be individually numbered, further emphasising their exclusivity.
(Update: Now live, the pre-order website confirms the availability of two specification levels – WRX and WRX Premium – and seven paint colours: red, blue, dark blue, black, grey, silver, and white.)
Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said the pre-order offer would give the most dedicated WRX fans to secure their car before the rest of the country.
"We've already had a huge spike of interest in WRX on our own website and are aware of significant pent-up demand," Senior said.
"We think this initiative will benefit our network by creating even more interest in WRX."
Subaru Australia has had success with online ordering in the past. The company's initial allocation of 201 BRZ sports cars sold out within three hours in July last year in a frenzied process that crashed the special pre-order page due to its overwhelming popularity.
Subaru says successful customers will need to complete the transaction and finalise paperwork within 14 days of their vehicle arriving at their nominated dealership.
As pricing and specifications will not be announced until closer to the car's launch in March, customers making online purchases will have the right to have their entire deposit fully refunded.
Online pre-orders will close at 11:59pm on December 13, or as soon as the 100 WRXs have been pre-ordered.
