Cook Medical has introduced a new fully-retractable .035 inch embolization coil for use in nonsurgical, minimally invasive embolization procedures.
Designed to provide physicians with more controlled delivery of embolization coils, the Retracta detachable embolization coil is packaged using platinum technology similar to Cook Medical's Nester coils.
The embolization coil allows physician to block or reduce blood flow in arteries and veins.
Physicians can also confirm placement accuracy under fluoroscopy by seeing the change in radiopacity at the detachment zone.
Visibility of the detachment zone allows a clinician to easily identify when the Retracta is ready to be detached, claims the company.
Physician if not satisfied with the positioning of the coil in the vessel can fully retract the coil into the catheter and reposition it before detachment.
Cook Medical embolization senior global product manager Andrew Conder said when trying to control bleeding, precise coil placement is critical in embolization procedures.
"The Retracta is simple and affordable, and gives physicians control over placement," Conder added.
The company said it will showcase the product at the annual Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) meeting.
