PPG Industries has launched new Nutrishield and Nutrishield Solista coatings for food cans to meet food-contact regulatory requirements.
The new Nutrishield Solista internal protective spray coatings are developed for drawn and wall-ironed cans to pack ready meals, soups and infant foods such as milk.
These Bisphenol A non-intent (BPA-NI) coatings with enhanced flavor-neutral properties, which help easily affected products pass extensive flavor tests, are suitable for low- to high-pH and fatty foods.
Said to be the first BPA-NI solution for the food-can industry, the coatings offer excellent pack and sulfur resistance, and meat-release properties.
These coatings comply with North American and European regulations and are food-contact compliant, certified by independent institutes, the company said.
PPG packaging coatings global technical director Charles Turner said: "The patented Nutrishield Solista internal spray coatings technology resulted from intensive research and development that involved extensive testing, pack-testing and industrial scale-up trials.
"They are suitable for all two-piece drawn and wall-ironed can sizes, and they can be introduced to food-can-makers' lines that use standard equipment without major modifications.
"Additionally, Nutrishield Solista coatings cover all weight specifications and exhibit excellent cure robustness."
The company plans to establish Nutrishield Solista spray coatings production capacity in all regions to enable global supply of the product.
According to PPG, over three billion food cans will have been coated with Nutrishield Solista spray coatings by the end of this year.
PPG produces Nutrishield Solista coatings in vessels that are dedicated to the manufacture of BPA-NI spray.
The product line comprises the PPG4553 series, PPG4220 series and PPG4600 series, in gold, buff and grey versions.
PPG also offers a complete new-generation system for drawn and wall-ironed food cans, with BPA-NI PPG Washcoat (PPG5200 series) that is fully compatible with Nutrishield Solista internal spray coatings.
