If the direction lights hovering above the three lanes on the Peace Bridge seem brighter, there's a good reason for it.
Crews from the Buffalo and Fort Erie Public Bridge Authority have finished installing several hundred LED bulbs in the 24 separate gantry directional heads on the Peace Bridge. The gantry heads show red and green arrows that determine which lanes - and in what direction — are open.

The LED bulbs are brighter, use less energy and could result in cost savings for the authority. Officials estimate the $70,000 project, which began earlier this fall, can yield energy savings of up to 80 percent per gantry unit, compared with traditional light bulbs.
"This project is yet another example of our ongoing efforts to demonstrate environmental stewardship at the Peace Bridge and become an even greener port," said PBA Chairman Sam Hoyt.
The project comes on the heels of the PBA instituting a "no idling policy" this past August for all vehicles parked in its secondary plaza or the Duty Free shops parking lots.
