Now Elon Musk has floated the possibility of moving us all to Mars, you might want to start checking out the real estate options on The Red Planet.
Assuring you’re rocking a PSVR or HTC Vive headset, you can temporarily become a martian with an assist from The Martian VR Experience, which is out tomorrow.
The Martian, of course, was a mightily popular Hollywood adaptation of Andy Weir’s book. It featured Matt Damon as NASA botanist Matt Watney, who was left behind on Mars after his crew was forced to evacuate during a sandstorm.
According to Fox, app users will be able to enjoy Mars from a first and third-person perspective.
“Viewers can fly onto the surface of Mars, steer at zero gravity through space, drive a rover navigating over craters and experience key scenes from the hit film in a 360-degree virtual reality environment,” the studio writes.
Fox has published a 360-degree video (via Engadget) to highlight the app, which you can see below.
“With the tools available to us in virtual reality, we can raise the bar even higher. The audience can experience storytelling in ways we’ve only been able to imagine,” says Robert Stromberg, who directed the experience.
“With VR you are the person walking the planet. It is uncanny. Mars has never been closer to our grasp."
The app from Fox was initially touted in January at CES, but it’s finally available to download from tomorrow for $20. Support for the Oculus Rift is coming soon.
