Philips Lighting has won the contract to install LED lighting throughout the properties of Unite Students, one of the UK’s largest managers and developers of student accommodation.
The £21 million contract will see the lighting manufacturer upgrade the lighting throughout Unite’s properties over the next two years. Unite Students is contributing £9.6 million to the project with the remainder funded by Unite’s co-investment partners.
Unite is making the investment as part of its ‘Home for Success’ commitment to improve the physical space and energy efficiency of its buildings portfolio of over 120 properties accommodating some 41,000 students in 23 UK towns and cities.
Over 300,000 new light fittings and 85,000 sensors and dimmers will be installed and payback for the lighting upgrade is anticipated to take five years.
The contract includes LED lighting for corridors, kitchens, lounges, common rooms, and reception spaces, as well as outdoor areas. Each student bedroom will also be fitted with a dimmer switche and a Philips LivingColors colour change lamp.
Richard Smith, managing director for Unite Students, said: “The new lighting will create a more inviting space for students which they can personalise for socialising or study. At the same time it will reduce Unite’s carbon footprint and the longer lifecycle of LED lights will significantly reduce maintenance workloads for our city teams.”
