Trinseo Received US FDA Approval for Considering Several Grades of Its Magnum ABS Resins

Plastics, latex and rubber firm Trinseo has received US Food and Drug Association’s (FDA) approval for considering several grades of its Magnum ABS resins as food contact compliant.

The approval of Food Contact Substance Notification (FCN) was given to Magnum ABS 3453, 3904 / 3904 Smooth and 8391 / 8391 MED resins.

The food contact compliance means the materials can contact food safely.

The resins, which are made using a proprietary mass polymerization process rather than a traditional emulsion process, have been okayed under the FDA's Conditions of Use E through G, room temperature to frozen storage.

The FDA said in a statement: "The FCS is not for use in contact with infant formula and breast milk. Such uses were not included as part of the intended use of the substance in the FCN."

Food contact compliance of the resins allows Trinseo to use them in kitchen appliances, kitchenware, and food packaging.

"Trinseo's FDA compliance is especially important to its consumer essential markets (CEM) Medical Devices business. Medical customers are likely to prefer food contact compliant materials as a product enhancement beyond the compliance to biocompatibility standards alone," the company said in a statement.

Trinseo has 19 manufacturing sites across the globe.
