Sugar Creek Packing Plans to Invest $28.5m to Expand and Upgrade a 77,000ft2 Plant in US

US food company Sugar Creek Packing plans to invest $28.5m to expand and upgrade a 77,000ft2 plant in Cambridge City, Indiana, which was formerly owned by Really Cool Foods.

The plant, located in Indiana Gateway Industrial Park, Wayne County, was closed by Really Cool Foods in November 2011, after the company unsuccesfully tried to sell the business. The plant closure led to a loss of 130 jobs.

The renovation project will include addition of refrigeration space and purchase of equipment. It will also see the addition of five cooking lines - about two cooking lines will be installed by 2013, and one cooking line will be added each year until 2016.

The plant is expected to be begin production in late 2013, and will be fully operational in 2016, creating 400 new jobs.

Sugar Creek noted that although the product range for the plant has not been finalized, it will focus on ready-to-eat products.

The company had acquired the Indiana facility for $13m in US Bankruptcy Court sale in August 2012.

Sugar Creek, based in Washington Court House, Ohio, operates five facilities in Ohio and Kansas, and offers raw and fully cooked products for domestic and international customers.
