The Pakistani Government Is Committed Towards Resolving The Issues of The Carpet Industry

The Pakistani Government is committed towards resolving the issues of the carpet industry and is determined to enhance the export of handmade carpets and rugs from the country to all over the world, said Punjab Minister for Commerce and Industries Chaudhry Muhammad Shafique at the Pakistan Hand-knotted Carpet Exhibition 2013, which concluded recently in Lahore.

Mr. Shafique said the sector plays an important role in uplifting the country’s economy and the carpet fair not only facilitates entrepreneurs and businessmen but also highlights the potential of the sector in Pakistan.

The four-day fair, organized by Pakistan Carpet Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PCMEA) and the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP), saw participation from more than 150 delegates belonging to countries such as China, India, Nepal, Spain and Germany.

The Punjab Minister for Commerce and Industries acknowledged the role of hand-knotted carpet industry in job creation and strengthening the economy of the country and assured that the government would support the sector as hundreds of thousands of people were attached with it.

PCMEA’s newly elected chairman Akhtar Nazir Khan Cooki said China, which is the major buyer of Pakistani handmade carpets would help the carpet sector of the country to enhance competitiveness and foray into the Chinese market.

A Chinese delegation had visited the four-day fair and the representatives have expressed that they would be delighted to extend help to Pakistani handmade carpets sector for further upgradation, he added.

More than 30 entrepreneurs from Pakistan displayed handmade carpets and rugs at the exhibition and various importers, interior decorators, architects, home furnishing companies and color combination experts from the US, Europe, Far East, Australia, Middle East and Africa attended the fair.

According to PCMEA, the main objective of holding the exhibition was to help local manufacturers and exporters to put their products on display in a systematic way and to provide carpet manufacturers and designers an opportunity to get latest information about foreign designs and color combinations for carpets.
