LED Firms Should Cooperate and Build a Single Brand to Maximize Competitive Advantages

LED firms in Greater China should cooperate and build a single brand to maximize their competitive advantages, according to Robert Yeh, chairman of Taiwan-based LED packaging house Everlight Electronics.

Yeh noted that China has a large consumer market for LEDs and Taiwan-based LED firms have strong competitiveness, therefore firms in Greater China should combine strengths and build a single brand to compete with international brands such as GE, Osram, and Philips, said Yeh.

Ming Jiunn Jou, president of Taiwan-based LED chipmaker Epistar, pointed out that a single LED lighting brand developed by the LED firms in Greater China is possible in the long run. However, currently, firms in Greater China should focus on obtaining market share in China before entering the international market.

Market investors are concerned about the possibility that the LED industry in Taiwan may follow the paths of the solar and DRAM industries, said Jou. The LED industry will not follow those paths, asserted Jou, because the China government is not going to subsidize the industry, and demand is expected to grow continuously.

Yeh stated that Taiwan's LED industry has patents on packaging and chip technologies, unlike the DRAM industry.
