Taiwan-based LED companies have held different views over the outlook for the first quarter of 2012 after most of them posted a decline in revenues in December. Taiwan-based LED firm Unity Opto reported 2011 total revenues of NT$5.76 billion (US$191 million), a 15% decrease on year. The revenues from LED backlight units (BLUs) decreased 20% on year. But sales from LED lightings continue to grow. Unity Opto believes the output value of the LED industry in 2012 will continue to grow. Lextar reported December revenues of NT$710 million, down 12.6% on month. The 2011 total revenues reached NT$9.1 billion, up 13% compared to 2010. Lextar believes the low demand in the market will continue throughout first-quarter 2011. Lite-On's global December revenues totaled NT$9.303 billion, representing a 3% on-month decrease. The accumulated fourth quarter revenues reached NT$29.069 billion. Lite-On reported 2011 total revenues reached NT$118.88 billion, a slight 3.7% decrease on year. In particular, the revenues from power supply for high-end cloud computing equipment grew by 4% from 2010. The 2011 total revenues from the LED business unit reached NT$14 billion. The global LED TV penetration rate in 2011 was around 40%, and industry observers expect the figure to grow above 65% in 2012. Source: www.digitimes.com
