University of Strathclyde micro-LED spin-out mLED has secured £378,000 of growth cash, adding to £150,000 seed funding it received in June 2010.

Lead by Braveheart Investment Group, the round came from Braveheart's established network of private clients, the Scottish Enterprise Co-Investment Fund and members of both mLED's board and technical advisory council.

"The additional equity funding will enable the company to increase its personnel, enhance its intellectual property and market its proprietary technology to initial customers," said Braveheart.

Key to the firm is intellectual property that allows tight arrays of flip-chip GaN LEDs to be constructed.

"The platform technology was developed over a 10 year period at the Institute of Photonics at the University of Strathclyde, where over £7m was invested in research leading to the core patent," said Braveheart. "mLED is introducing ultra-high brightness micro-emitter arrays that are opening up segments within the nascent embedded pico projector market,"

"It can deliver high optical power densities in projection or proximity exposure formats, the latter being especially useful for integrated lab-on-chip technology", said mLED.

A developer kits with 16μm emitters on 50μm centre to centre pitch is available.

Another kit uses a custom CMOS driver to individually address a 64 LED array, where 1.3W/mm2 optical power density at 450nm is claimed.

"Pulsed mode operation of 25ns pulse width of 85pJ at 405nm, and around 500pJ at 450nm, have been demonstrated," said the firm.
