BT broadband has suffered major outages across the UK today, with the company blaming ''equipment failures'' for the problems.
The outages began at lunchtime yesterday when users in the 01414 and 01179 dialling code areas of Glasgow were unable to get online.
Today the issues spread further south, with customers in Sheffield losing their connections this morning and users in and around London also unable to get online from midday.
BT's service status website said the issues were ongoing and it had engineers working to fix the problems ''as quickly as [they] can'', but many businesses and consumers were still left without their broadband services.
''This morning, an equipment failure in Sheffield resulted in the loss of broadband service for some BT Retail residential and business customers, as well as a loss of service at some BT Wi-Fi hotspots,'' BT told Computer Weekly.
''This has now been resolved and services are being restored. Customers still experiencing problems may find that by turning their BT Hub off and on again, their broadband will work again.''
''Another, unrelated, equipment failure in London has resulted in loss of broadband services for a number of BT Retail customers [and] we are currently working to resolve this.''
A spokesman from BT said the Glasgow issues were separate as well, but had only affected 37 customers.
BT's Twitter feed has been hit by a barrage of questions from customers, with the outage affecting businesses as diverse as IT support firm MSTech Associates, which first reported the fault over five hours ago, and family-run local company Kemps Garage.
The advice from BT customer services is to continue to check the status website here or call its automated line on 0800 169 0199 for updates.
