The Nissan GT-R Nismo, confirmed for production in 2014 and due to be unveiled at November's Tokyo motor show, could become the world's fastest accelerating production car, according to a new report.
Based on the current 404kW/628Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V6-powered Nissan GT-R – a car that already claims 0-100km/h in 2.7 seconds – Nissan has previously said the GT-R Nismo will become "the ultimate GT-R for the road".
And if a report from the UK's Auto Express is accurate, the four-wheel-drive Japanese supercar will become the fastest accelerating production car, reaching three figures from a standstill in 2.0 seconds. That's faster than the Bugatti Veyron (2.46sec) and on par with an average Formula One car.
The performance statistic comes from an unnamed inside source and is backed by comments from an engineer at Williams, the British Formula One team that recently agreed to collaborate with Nissan's performance division.
"You'd be surprised at how much room for improvement there is – even with a car like the GT-R," the engineer told the publication.
"Where you expect it's all been tuned to the maximum, it's actually easy to make big gains."
Along with carbonfibre ad-ons, a new exhaust system and cosmetic Nismo highlights, the GTR-Nismo is expected to benefit from more power and less weight than the standard 1699kg car.
Nismo chief product specialist Hiroshi Tamura further hinted at the performance of upcoming Nismo models, which will include a 370Z Nismo, telling Auto Express, "We're looking to satisfy people who've grown up tuning performance cars in [the] Gran Turismo [video game]."
Nissan Australia has previously said the Nismo models, including the GT-R Nismo, are under assessment for our market, but not yet confirmed.
