The Import Volume of Turkey's Coking Coal Will Back up to March Level in May

According to the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TUIK), in May this year Turkey's coking coal imports amounted to 2.35 million mt, up 10 percent year on year and increasing by 24.9 percent compared to April. Turkey's coking coal imports had fallen in April to the lowest level of the year after exceeding 2 million mt in each of the previous two months, as can be seen in the chart below.

Turkey's Coking Coal Imports Return to March Level in May

In the first five months of the current year, Turkey's coking coal imports totaled 10.6 million metric tons, decreasing 3.5 percent compared to the same period of 2012.

Turkey's coking coal imports from Russia, Turkey's largest coking coal source in the first five months of the year, amounted to 770,286 mt in May, decreasing 5.8 percent year-on-year but up compared to the low level of 479,587 mt recorded in April. Turkey's coking coal imports from South Africa, which was its second largest coking coal source in the first five months, decreased to 319,753 mt in May compared to the April level of 654,933 mt. According to the TUIK data, there is no record of coking coal imports from South Africa to Turkey in May 2012.
