BT today confirmed it would be running fibre broadband to a further 163 exchanges as part of its roll-out scheme across the UK.
The Openreach division of the company has committed £2.5bn to fund the deployment, which BT claims will provide two-thirds of the UK with fibre broadband by the end of 2014 – excluding its work with the government to extend connections to rural areas.
So far, BT serves 11 million premises and this latest instalment will add a further million homes and businesses to the total.
The majority of the exchanges will fall within England – 127 – while Scotland gets 35 more enabled. Wales only has one extra exchange hooked up to the fibre network in Newport.
BT has warned, however, that not everyone in those areas will be able to get connections when the exchanges are lit up.
"Due to the current network topography and the economics of deployment, it is likely that some premises within the selected exchange areas will not initially be able to access fibre-based broadband," said a statement from the firm.
"Openreach is actively looking at alternative solutions for these locations."
For those who can access the exchanges though, there will be the possibilities of either fibre to the cabinet or fibre to the premises connections – depending on where you live – which can reach download speeds of up to 80Mbps or 330Mbps respectively.
BT has yet to announce which areas will be providing which connections.
Mike Galvin, managing director of network investment for BT Openreach, said this latest announcement meant "the bulk" of the new exchanges had been announced.
