Trade Resources Industry Views Robert Lewis's Mica Pendant Lamps

Robert Lewis's Mica Pendant Lamps

Robert Lewis's mica pendant lamps, now occupying the window of the Future Perfect in NoHo,have a disco-geodesic look—which is no surprise considering their origins.Mr.Lewis,a self-taught lighting designer whose pieces can be found at the Ace Hotel in Palm Springs and in several Kiki de Montparnasse boutiques, made the first model while living in Miami in the mid-'90s."I was looking for a way to build something without a metal frame,"he said."I ended up with an archetypal Buckyball structure, where the pattern holds itself."

Earthy Lamps with a Disco Vibe

He produces the lamps in his downtown Los Angeles studio, cutting, soldering and lacquering the mica. The look is"organic and almost Brutalist,"he said."They're extremely handcrafted. But when you step back there is a certain serenity to them."
