Volvo Car Australia is recalling 474 diesel-powered vehicles over a fault relating to the cars’ auxiliary belt tensioner.
Affecting 2011-built Volvo S60, XC70 and XC60 models powered by the 2.4-litre five-cylinder turbo-diesel engine, the recall follows the identification of “early wear” on auxiliary belt tensioners in some vehicles during routine investigations.
According to the official recall notice on the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission’s (ACCC) product safety recalls website, if “deviation” occurs there may be a loud noise and, in the worst case scenario, a loss of drive and power steering assistance.
“This may pose a hazard to the driver and other road users,” the notice says.
Volvo says there have been no reports of any incidents or injuries relating to the recall.
Volvo Car Australia marketing and communications director Oliver Peagam told CarAdvice the company iscontacting all owners of affected vehicles to arrange inspections. Replacement of the belt tensioner and belt will only occur if required, taking approximately 30 minutes to complete.
An identical auxiliary belt tensioner issue forced the recall of 1217 2009-2010 model year S80, XC70 and XC60 vehicles in 2011, with 484 2009 model year examples recalled in 2010.
