Taiwan's HTC Sold 2.8 Million Smartphones in Mainland China

Taiwan’s HTC Corp. sold 2.8 million smartphones in mainland China in the third quarter of 2012, nearly double the amount it sold a quarter earlier in the mainland, according to market consulting firm Canalys,

Meanwhile, the sale increase helped boost the company’s share of the mainland’s market to 5.8% from 2.9%.

Industry executives attributed the increases to the company’s partnership with the mainland’s top three mobile service providers, namely China Unicom, China Telecom and China Mobile.

In the third quarter of 2012, Samsung was the No.1 smartphone supplier in the Chinese mainland with a 14% market share, followed by No.2 supplier Lenovo with 13%. The rest spots of the mainland’s top five smartphone-vendor rankings were all held by the mainland’s homegrown suppliers, including ZTE and Huawei. Apple had an 8% share of Chinese mainland market, holding the sixth place.

Industry executives estimated HTC’s mounting sales in mainland China will make the mainland HTC’s foremost revenue contributor in 2013, outweighing Europe and the United States.

Goldman Sachs estimated HTC’s revenue from sales in the mainland at US$1.6 billon for the second half of 2012, a figure which is likely to outstrip Lenovo’s and that of other mainland China homegrown vendors.

Industry executives pointed out that HTC’s sales recessions in the third quarter mostly happed in Europe and the United States.
