The ongoing national level 'Silk Fab' expo in the north Indian city of Chandigarh is offering visitors an opportunity to have a look at and choose from a wide range of silk and silk products not just from the region, but from across the country.
To enhance the growth prospects of the country's handloom industry and to facilitate establishment of a direct link between weavers and buyers, the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC) Ltd has been organizing these expos across India.
The expo, which would go on in the city till October 29, has become an annual event quite awaited by the ladies, who get a chance to pick some of the best silk items being offered by artisans across the nation.
In all 14 organizations from different states are participating in the expo, showcasing their unique weaves and designs, including sarees from Andhra Pradesh's Ghadwal region which come in light colours with silk borders and pallus, well-known Kantha work sarees and dupattas from West Bengal, and also a wide-range of fabrics and garments showcasing Madhubani art.
Also on display are Gujarat's Gathjora and Patola, Jharkhand's Kantha and kosa silk, Chanderi and Maheshwari sarees from Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra's Paithani, Orissa's Sambalpur and also sarees, dress materials and Khadi silk from Chattisgarh, which come in vibrant colours and their own different designs created by weavers.
Moreover, silk weaves like Assam's Moonga silk, Bihar's Tassar and Kantha silk complimented by Chattisgarh's tribal work, Andhra Pradesh's Pochampally and Dharmavaram and Bihar's Tassar and Kantha are also being showcased at the expo.
Being the second biggest employer, next to agriculture, Indian handloom sector directly or indirectly provides employment to around 6.5 million people in the country.
