GSK Is Mulling to Establish a Joint Venture with a Chinese Company

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) is mulling to establish a joint venture (JV) with a Chinese company as part of its vaccine strategy of teaming up with local partners.

The plans come at a time when the company is facing corruption and tax laws violations allegations in the country.

GSK vaccines chief Christophe Weber was quoted by Bloomberg as saying that the company is planning to partner with a local company to help with research and marketing.

"[Over the next 10 years] the Chinese government will progressively upgrade its immunization calendar, and we want to be there and to be a partner when that happens," Weber added.

In early July 2013, China's Ministry of Public Security announced that some executives of GSK in China have pleaded guilty to bribery and tax law related violations.

The ministry has charged that GSK's staff was involved in offering bribes to Chinese government officials, medical associations, hospitals and doctors in order to increase sales and prices in the country.
