Transport and Technical Services (TTS) on the isle of Jersey is continuing to push ahead with a programme of regeneration as it replaces further street lights in a bid to improve energy efficiency and cut light pollution.

Old and corroded street lights at the junction of La Route du Fort and Green Street have now been replaced with energy-efficient lighting, the Jersey Chamber of Commerce announced. The move comes as the tenth project in an ongoing programme of maintenance and improvement, which began four years ago.

The new lights only use half of the energy of the systems that were in place before and, furthermore, only direct light to where it is needed which consequently is reducing light pollution - something which is particularly important on a beautiful island like Jersey.

Other projects which have already helped to improve lighting include the replacement of street lights in places like Victoria Avenue and Commercial Buildings. On La Route de St Aubin and The Parade, from Union Street to Millbrook, about £3,000 a year is currently being saved thanks to a retrofit project.

LED technology, often used in energy-efficient, cost-reducing lighting projects, is scheduled to be used in a future redevelopment scheme around La Route de la Liberation, Mont les Vaux and La Route des Genets.

Deputy Kevin Lewis, minister for TTS, acknowledged that there has been significant development in the lighting industry, as electrical engineers continue to discover newer and more innovative ways to reap the practical benefits of lighting while slashing costs and keeping consciences clear from an environmental perspective.

He added: "Whenever lighting is in need of replacement, we source new lighting that will provide the illumination that we require but that provides the best energy and maintenance savings, and cuts light pollution."

As well as replacing old, inefficient outdoor lighting, the TTS has taken on a policy of reducing light intensity in order to save money. The new venture sees Jersey dimming new street lighting between 22:00 and 06:00 in certain areas, particularly where there are no major junctions.
