Ledlink Optics recently had a plant completed in Yangzhou as part of subsidies given by China's government in order to promote the LED industry amongst increasingly diverse LED lighting applications and rigorous product specification requirements from all over the world. The Taiwan-based optics solution provider for the solid state lighting industry was established in 2008 and has an estimated production capacity of 15 million pieces. It mainly focuses on secondary optical solutions and modules. It also offers customized solutions for international packaging manufacturers and lighting module manufacturers, such as Cree, Nichia, Philips Lumileds, Osram, Samsung LED, Seoul Semiconductor, and Edison. Ledlink's 2011 consolidated revenue reached NT$651 million (US$22 million), which was a 51% on-year growth, according to its recently released financial statements. Its operating margin was NT$324 million and its consolidated gross profit margin was 49.71%, a drop compared to its 58.92% profit margin in 2010. Compared to LED chip and packaging manufacturers, its high gross profit margin is impressive. But due to management and marketing costs of around NT$170 million (US$5.8 million) coupled with operating costs and taxes, Ledlink only saw an EPS of NT$2.93. In addition, Ledlink indicated that due to directional characteristics of LED's light source, lighting modules and fixtures need to go through secondary optical designs to reduce glare, which will create different lighting effects.as well as increase the performance of lighting fixtures. Secondary optical lens are mostly acrylic-based, but their drawback is lack of fire protection. Because of this, industries have begun to use PC polycarbonate materials in recent years. But this means an increase of flame retardants, which will reduce luminous efficiency by 8-15%. Therefore, different design requirements for different kinds of lighting need to be taken into consideration. Meanwhile, Ledlink said it will not deal with downstream lighting modules and packaging since it is an upstream components supplier as well as certified by major LED manufacturers all over the world.
