A citizens group has opposed the move of the Central Government to set up a Textile Park in Tamil Nadu saying that the Park would aggravate the serious pollution problems faced by Tirupur and its surrounding regions.
In a statement, the Vellore Citizens Welfare Forum (VCWF) said that areas around Tirupur are already highly polluted by the effluents discharged by dyeing and bleaching units.
“These units are generating highly toxic effluents and polluting water bodies like the Cauvery river and its tributaries,” the statement added.
VCFW claimed that thousands of hectares of agricultural lands too have been damaged badly and agricultural production has been greatly reduced due to the pollution.
As against a permissible limit of 2,100 ppm (parts per million), level of total dissolved solids (TDS) in the Noyyal River, had increased to between 7,000-11,000 ppm, due to pollution from the textile industry, it informed.
VCFW urged the Tamil Nadu government not to set up a Textile Park since, it will cause more pollution and further damage to water bodies, agricultural lands, environment and health of the people. (AR)
