According to the Mineral Industry Survey released by the US Geological Survey, stocks of imported and domestic scrap in the US at the end of September 2012 amounted to 3.6 million tonne, slightly up compared to the end of August.
Exports of iron and steel scrap from the US in the month of September decreased to 1.64 million tonne, down 21% compared to August. Turkey was the leading country of destination, with 656,000 tonne, accounting for 40 percent of total export tonnages, followed by South Korea with 254,000 tonne and Taiwan with 238,000 tonne.
US imports of iron and steel scrap in September this year were down slightly month on month, amounting to 261,000 tonne. Canada was the leading country of origin, accounting for 84% of the total imported tonnage, exporting 220,000 tonne of iron and steel scrap to the US in the given month.
