Nova Scotia Is Poised to Become One of The First Jurisdictions

Nova Scotia is poised to become one of the first jurisdictions in North America to require the use of energy-efficient LED lighting on roads and highways.

Under the province's newly amended Energy-Efficient Appliances Regulation, all of the province's highway lighting must be converted to LEDs by the end of 2019.

Municipalities have until the end of 2022 to complete the conversion.

Energy Minister Charlie Parker says using LED lighting on roadways will reduce the province's annual electricity bill by $5 million.

The LED lights use half the energy of regular street lights.

LED stands for Light Emitting Diode.
