Deal will fuel Samsung’s storage capabilities
Samsung Electronics has acquired the US-based storage software provider Nvelo, for an undisclosed sum. The company said that the acquisition includes privately held Nvelo's technology and personnel, who will transfer over to Samsung.
Financial details were not disclosed.
Nvelo was formed in June 2010 as a spin-off firm during the acquisition of Denali Software by Cadence Design Systems.
Nvelo develops data caching software and the company's Dataplex software, which is yet to be launched, will be useful to PC OEMs and solid-state drives (SSDs) vendors, as it would improve the speed in devices that use either hard disk drives (HDDs) for their main storage.
As part of the purchase, Nvelo's storage technology will be integrated into Samsung's SSD technologies to give the South Korean firm's customers access to a portfolio of NAND storage solutions suitable for a range of computing platforms, the company said.
Samsung Electronics executive vice president of Flash product & technology, Device Solutions, Young-Hyun Jun, said: "The acquisition of NVELO will enable us to extend our ability to provide SSD related storage solutions to customers."
NVELO president and CEO Jiurong Cheng added: "We look forward to accelerating storage innovation in close cooperation with Samsung storage experts as we help to deliver fully integrated SSD solutions to the market."
In July 2012, Samsung acquired UK-based semiconductor design company Cambridge Silicon Radio's (CSR) handset connectivity and location technology for $310m.
