By 2020, conventional streetlights would be replaced by LEDs. The LEDs consume one-third of the power consumed by the conventional streetlights and also illuminate a larger area. The LED bulbs and tubelights would become a part of every household due to less power consumption, said Amrit Manwani, an alumnus of IIT-Kanpur.

Manwani, a co-ordinator of 1972 batch, said LED tubelights and bulbs consume only 1/10 of the power consumed by tubelights and bulbs. He said that by 2020 only tubelight made of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) would be used in the country. The government is also promoting the LED lamps and lights. "The tubelights and the bulbs having LED as content would have a life of 15 years and cost around Rs 800. It would be very economical apart from providing better lighting," Manwani said.

When asked how he stepped into entrepreneurship after working for 18 years, Amrit said that after working for so many years, the thought of generating employment pushed me to start a venture of my own In Nodia in 1989 and the production began in 1990. He said a hardware park is proposed to come up in national capital region (NCR), where electronics components manufacturing companies would set up units.

Umesh Jindal, another alumnus running a software company of his own in US said that his company prepares software for health care industry. A graduate in electrical engineering from IIT-Kanpur, Jindal said that his company prepares electronic medical racket (EMR), a software capable of keeping medical data of patients. In India, many top hospitals are using advanced EMR software to record the medical data of patients.
