Ireland Continues to Exceed Used Packaging Recovery and Recycling Goals of EU

Ireland continued to exceed used packaging recovery and recycling goals of EU by recovering and recycling 652,000t in 2011, a rise of 4.1% compared to 2010, according to Repak.

According to the industry funded organization Repak, packaging recovery/recycling for the material types including aluminum, glass, plastic, and steel rose by 19.6%, 14%, 20.9% and 7.2%, respectively.

For 2011, household packaging recovery increased 9.7% to 208,000t.

Central Statistics Office (CSO) figures revealed that Ireland recovered 152k of used packaging per head of population in 2009.

The increase in plastic packaging recovered reflects growth in refuse derived fuel, Repak added.
