BRE and the Open BIM Network have joined forces to develop standards for building information modelling (BIM) to ensure all parties working on construction projects know how to use BIM in compliance with UK government policy.
BRE's BuildingSmart, a group of technical experts which includes?specialists in lighting, has announced it is working with the Open BIM Network a UK group of BIM users, to test standards it is developing on live building projects. The two groups are currently working together to test standards on a project at Gatwick airport.

The government has said BIM will be a required service in 2016 for those looking to make the tender list for any UK public sector project. BIM has been described by the government's BIM task force as a cooperative way of exchanging information between different disciplines at specific points in a construction project.
BRE and BuildingSmart director Nick Tune said: "Getting the users and technical people together in this way means we can create the most effective, user friendly standards and products that will help the construction industry realise the benefits of BIM – it's a very strong dynamic".?
The UK's Government Construction Strategy, published in 2011, announced that government would require collaborative 3D BIM (with all project and asset information, documentation and data) on its projects by 2016.
