Japanese car maker Toyota is planning to launch a system in its vehicles that allows charging smartphone, while driving through the use of a wireless mat.
The new Qi Wireless In-Car Charging system will be offered for Qi-enabled mobile phones and devices in its upcoming 2013 Avalon's gasoline and hybrid versions.
Qi, which is the global standard for wireless power and charging, allows devices of any brand or manufacturer, to be charged by placing them on, or near, any Qi-enabled surface.
Toyota Avalon chief engineer Randy Stephens said that the new technology is aimed at improving the consumer experience.
"We see wireless charging as an important feature that helps enhance the high-technology theme and consumer interface offered by Avalon Limited which is already equipped with three TFT color screens and Intellitouch controls," Stephens said.
Being supplied by DENSO, the new wireless charging system is based on technology developed by ConvenientPower and Philips Lite-on Digital Solution (PLDS).
Currently, Qi wireless charging has been incorporated in about 34 mobile phone models including LG Google Nexus 4, Nokia Lumia 920, HTC Windows Phone 8X.
