German chemical company BASF has opened a new cathode materials production plant in Elyria, Ohio, US, that will manufacture nickel-metal-cobalt cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries used in electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrids.
BASF has invested about $50m for the construction of new Elyria plant, which was supported by a $24.6m grant from the US Department of Energy.
Built upon an area of 70,000 ft2, the new Elyria plant will make advanced Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese (NCM) cathode materials for the production of lithium-ion batteries for automotive and other high-end applications.
The operation in Elyria is supported by BASF battery materials research laboratories in nearby Beachwood, Ohio, and at the company's headquarters in Ludwigshafen, Germany.
