A Complaint Has Been Filed Against a Cebu-Based Trader

A complaint has been filed against a Cebu-based trader and her customs broker for allegedly attempting to illegally import P30 million worth of float glass from China. Customs Commissioner Ruffy Biazon himself led the formal filing of the complaint Thursday against CSB Import and Export owner Sanshane S. Barita and her customs broker Diorito R. Alberca at the Department of Justice. "The consignee and broker of these 25 container vans of float glass obviously wanted to avoid paying the appropriate taxes for their shipment, which should have been Php6, 762, 044.00, ” Biazon said in a statement. “But this will be a very costly experience for them as not only will their P30 million worth of float glass be confiscated by the government, they also have to face the smuggling charges we have now filed against them in court, " he added. Float glass is a sheet of glass made by floating molten glass on a bed of molten metal, typically tin. The shipment, contained in 25 20-foot container vans, was misclassified as Victory Clear Glass. It arrived at the Port of Davao from China on September 14, 2012. The misclassification was discovered five days later upon inspection by Customs authorities. Source: gmanetwork
