Center for Food Safety Has Alerted Companies to Stop Selling and to Recall Affected Beef

The Hong Kong Center for Food Safety has alerted companies to stop selling and to recall the affected beef from XL Foods,a Canadian meat packing company.

Shipments have been suspended for XL products which were produced on or after 24 August 2012,reported Cbc.ca.

The agency said that it will continue to co-operate with the Canadian authorities and closely monitor the situation.

"Relevant control measures will be reviewed when further information is obtained,"the agency added.

XL Foods'facility was closed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency(CFIA)following the recall of hundreds of beef products that began in mid-September due to possible E.coli contamination. The beef produced by the company was recalled across US and Canada over E.coli contamination concerns.

Foods contaminated with E.coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled, but consumption of such foods can lead to diarrhoea, dehydration and,in the most severe cases, kidney failure, and it can cause serious illness in very young, elderly, and those with weak immune systems.
