US packaged foods firm ConAgra is subject to a lawsuit which claims that hot dogs and other products sold under the company's Hebrew National brand are not kosher.
The lawsuit was filed by Minneapolis-based law firm Blackwell Burke on behalf of 11 consumers, in a US District Court in Minnesota.
In response, ConAgra said that Hebrew National products are kosher, and the lawsuit is without merit. It said that Hebrew National's kosher status is certified by a well-recognized and authorized third-party.
According to ConAgra, there is close rabbinical supervision of the food preparation process and packaging equipment.
In order for meat to be labelled kosher, the animal selected for slaughter must be healthy and clean. The lawsuit claims that unclean and unhealthy animals are often selected to be slaughtered for making Hebrew National products.
