India's Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL) seeks government intervention for construction of transportation infrastructure to carry iron ore from its Chiria iron ore reserves being developed in the eastern Indian province of Jharkhand, a Ministry of Steel official said on Friday, May 10.
Since infrastructure construction requires land from the provincial government of Jharkhand and support of Indian Railways for rail linkages, SAIL has suggested the setting up of a joint working group comprising representatives of the provincial government and the ministries of mines, steel, railways and shipping, so that construction could commence within specific timelines, the official said.
The Chiria mines with estimated 1.8 billion mt of high grade iron ore reserves are being developed by SAIL to produce 7 million mt per year in the first phase, subsequently ramping up to 15 million mt per year in the second phase.
