MDIC Consider Imposing a Series of Measures to Promote The Country's Plywood Industry

The Brazilian Ministry for Development, Industry and Foreign Trade (MDIC) is considering imposing a series of measures to promote the country’s plywood and sawmilling industry, according to the International Tropical Timber Organization (ITTO). For instance, the Ministry is exploring the option of abolishing the export duty of 8 % of the value of the product that applies to wood products exported to the US. This review might be connected to the 41 % plunge in Brazilian softwood lumber exports to the US to just 71,928 m3 in 2012. The sharp decline in Brazilian softwood lumber shipments came at the same time as rising US softwood lumber imports.
