Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister M Veerappa Moily has assured the weavers of Karnataka of full support from the Indian Government for the development of the sector and weavers' welfare. Speaking at the inauguration of golden jubilee celebrations of the Textile Cooperative Bank in Bangalore, the Minister said the weavers contribute to the development of India's rural economy, and urged the Karnataka state government to devise a plan to develop the textile industry in the state, in collaboration with the Central Government. Karnataka Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister HK Patil said the bank has been of great help to the weavers and the textile industry, and urged the weavers and the industry to take benefit of Mr. Moily's proposal of Central help. Ms. Umashree, Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, said there is still a long way to go for handloom weavers and sought support of the Central Government for further development of the handloom sector.
