Hankins Lumber Has Ordered Major Upgrades to NSS Lineal Edger Optimization

Hankins Lumber Updates Lineal Edger Line Woodland, WA (November 7, 2013) – Hankins Lumber, Elliott, MS, has ordered major upgrades to its Newnes Sawmill Suite (NSS) lineal edger optimization and PLC controls, according to equipment supplier USNR.

This upgrade will transition the software to the NSS 7.2 version and the Windows 7 operating platform. A few of the key features include:

? The new release requires only a single PC computer

? The Edger Rip feature allows a rip solution to be processed at the edger

? Fixed width logic allows the mill to process fixed width lumber; dimension, boards, timbers, planks, decking, etc. for international markets

? Employs full trimmer decision logic; runs trimmer logic along with edger logic

Scanning system and PLC Control

The existing lineal scan frame will be modified to accept new LPLe sensors to replace the obsolete Hydra sensors. The LPLe sensors are designed to operate at a high sample rate, allowing a tighter cross section scan down the length of the piece. The sensors also achieve very high data point density around the circumference of the piece (± 0.035-in.), producing a highly accurate optimization solution.

The PLC control system will be updated to the ControlLogix platform. A MillTrak lumber flow management system will control the flow at the sequencing transfer.

Ongoing Support

The mill has enrolled in USNR's gold level System Maintenance Program, which allows access to optimization software improvements as they become available, along with other premium support, the supplier said.
