Bangladesh to Make Action Plan for Implementing Various Compliances Related to RMG Sector

Bangladesh will make an action plan for implementing various compliances related to the readymade garments (RMG) sector.

At the Social Compliance Forum (SCF) meeting on RMG sector, chaired by Commerce Minister Ghulam Muhammed Quader, it was decided that the action plan would be placed before the United States Trade Representative (USTR) during the hearing on March 28.

The action plan will have specific timelines for implementing various compliance issues, including labour rights, Commerce Secretary Mahbub Ahmed told the Financial Express.

The SCF meeting on garment sector was called a month ahead of the schedule by the Ministry of Commerce due to growing pressure from the EU and the US on compliance issues like fire safety measures at factories, work conditions and formation of trade unions.

After reviewing the current overall situation in the clothing sector, the SCF meeting fixed deadline of February 28, 2013, for dismantling of 25 percent of factory roofs that are built using corrugated iron sheets. It also recommended imposition of fines on owners who do not get the work completed before the deadline.

Moreover, the SCF meeting also discussed the issue of industrial park as well as the list of risky factories prepared by the Ministry of Labour and Employment.
