Amul to Launch Lactose-Free Milk in India

India’s Amul dairy brand maker Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) is set to introduce new lactose-free milk in the country in a month.

Amul lactose-free milk is claimed to be the first of its type to be launched in the country, Business Standard reported.

Lactose intolerance is the most common food intolerance. People intolerant to lactose have difficulty in digesting milk sugars from dairy products due to insufficient amount of lactase enzyme in the gut.

Commenting on the launch, GCMMF managing director R S Sodhi was quoted by the publication as saying: "All our products are reasonably priced and this would not be an exception. This would be the first branded lactose-free milk in the country."

The company is investing close to INR12bn ($180.6m) to increase milk processing capacity from the current 24 million liters per day to up to 36 million liters per day by 2020.

Majority of GCMMF's turnover comes from liquid milk sales.
