2011 posed two big challenges for the LED industry.One came thanks to increased competition from relatively newly-established and heavily governmentbacked Chinese LED companies.The second came because the demand for LEDs to backlight LCD televisions was less than generally expected."It was surprising how quickly LED TV backlighting has peaked and increased the overcapacities in the marketplace,leading to very aggressive price declines driven by competitors who scrambled tofill their lines,"commented Aldo Kamper,chief executive officer of Regensburg,Germany's Osram Opto Semiconductors.
