Indian Garments Included in The US Department of Labor's List of 21 International Goods

India made garments, and zari and other embellished textiles are the items that have been included in the US Department of Labor's list of 21 international goods, that uses child or forced labour.
 
The listing does not specify or mention any disciplinary action or curtailment of imports by the US, but it is an embarrassment for the countries whose products have appeared on the list.
 
The department said its studies have confirmed that labour law infringement in various forms exist in India in the making of different textiles, including yarn, fabrics, carpets, as well as zari and embellished goods.
 
The 2012 US report has additionally given an estimated number of 57,000 children, aged between 5 and 17 years, who are engaged as workers in the carpet making industries of India, Pakistan and Nepal.
 
For the past four years, the US Department of Labor has been releasing an annual list of goods imported from foreign countries, where the problem of child or forced labour is quite rampant. The list now covers 134 items.
