Avery Dennison has launched a new anti-counterfeiting technology Sharp Tear that provides an extra layer of product security for pharmaceutical brands and enables existing serial numbers to be read directly through the label.
According to the global manufacturer and distributor of adhesive materials, the thin and clear co-extruded film Sharp Tear has been designed for tamper-evident applications, where an easy tear is needed in the label.
Avery Dennison Materials Group Specialty Segments senior product manager Hans Eichenwald said around 10% of drugs sold these days are already counterfeit according to the World Health Organization.
"Sharp Tear offers a rapid and reliable way to secure both product safety and brand reputation without impacting productivity or product margins," Eichenwald said.
Sharp Tear, which is part of the company's comprehensive range of pharma anti-counterfeiting and anti-tampering products, provides a seal that remains intact during normal handling.
The film that also improves productivity, tears easily in one direction if attempts are made to open the package and reveals tampering immediately.
Sharp Tear can either cover unwanted packaging information or allow important product details to be visible through the label. The label material comes with the regulatory compliance needed in pharma applications and also delivers performance with long term adhesion.
